Slovenia is a small south-central European country at the head of the Adriatic Sea. The country occupies the southern foothills of the Alps and is almost entirely hilly or mountainous. The country joined the EU in 2004 and adopted the euro in 2007.
In 2018 Slovenia was the world's 57th largest non-life market (excluding PA and healthcare). Non-life premium income was EUR 1.76bn, of which EUR 612.04mn was in respect of voluntary health. This is a supplement to the state health insurance system rather than a commercial insurance line. in 2019 non-life insurance penetration (excluding PA and voluntary health) was 2.11% of GDP.
The Slovenian non-life market consists of nine locally supervised companies and six "freedom of establishment" branches which are supervised elsewhere in the EU. The market is dominated by Triglav, which wrote 27.2% of premiums in 2019. Foreign insurers, which mainly derive from neighbouring Austria, had a combined market share of 24.2%. There are two domestic reinsurance companies.
